A Glen Ellyn, Illinois native, Hayes attended Illinois State University in the early 1990s and majored in music performance and conducting with a minor in theatre. Hayes portrays Jack McFarland on the television series Will & Grace and received an Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actor in a television comedy series in September of 2000. In addition to his work on Will & Grace, he has composed, done comedy, and performed in commercials with credits that include Steppenwolf Theatre and Second City in Chicago, and the Kenny Roger's Christmas Show. In 1998 he won critical acclaim for his role in the independent film, Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss.
